Melba Jane Hart, 84, passed away on January 6, 2019 in Ellensburg, Washington. Born in Tacoma in 1934, Melba spent the majority of her youth in the Cashmere/Wenatchee area. Melba loved telling stories of exploring the hills of Malaga with her siblings and cousins searching for treasures. She met and married Bob Hart while working on the Swanson Ranch in Wisdom, MT, in 1951, later moving to Port Angeles, Washington and eventually settling in the Kittitas Valley in 1960. Melba was a farmer’s wife who could accomplish whatever chores were needed on the ranch, from baling hay to irrigating. She particularly loved reading, gardening, canning fruits & vegetables, and hiking--many a Sunday afternoon was spent exploring the hills and valleys to find wildflowers.  After raising six children, she went back to school at age 53 to pursue her dream of becoming a travel agent. She was an avid student of geography and history and liked researching travel locations to explore. Prior to becoming a travel agent, she spent years providing excellent customer service at several local businesses.
She had a lifelong love of music and was a member of the All State Choir, as well as a member of many church choirs. One of her most treasured possessions was an audio recording made in 1942 with her dad and siblings singing Christmas carols. Melba was an athlete (before it was proper for women to be known as athletes) and enjoyed playing softball, basketball, and track. She used to say she would have given Babe Didrikson a run for her money in the 100 yard dash.  Her love of sports made her a dedicated fan of all local and regional teams, but she was the biggest fan of her kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren. Melba spent hundreds of hours cheering on her family at sporting events, concerts, school plays, and everything in between. Everyone could count on Grama Hart to arrive at least 45 minutes early in order to get the perfect seat.
Melba was a member of the Family Christian Center (Assembly of God) for over 58 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher/superintendent; youth group leader, Missionnette leader, Women’s Ministry leader, Choir leader, and Vice President of the Church Board. Her faith in God was the guiding factor in her life. She practiced service above self and preferred work in the trenches to being in the spotlight. Special thanks to Pastor Curt Rosen and the congregation of FCC for providing a venue for Melba to serve the Lord and be a member of the fellowship family.
Melba is survived by her children: Del (Carol) Hart, Barb (Doug) Demory, Karen (Matt) Woods, and Teresa (Troy) Bryant; her grandchildren: David, Lisa, Christa, Katherine, Carry, Jonathan, Richard, Kimberly, Kristen, Casey, Matthew, Myranda, Heather, Skyler; and 25 great-grandchildren. Melba is also survived by her sister and best friend, Dee Slocumb, her brothers Del (Linda) Gott and Leonard (Diane) Gott, and numerous nieces and nephews who considered her a second mom. Melba was predeceased by: her husband of 35 years, Bob Hart; her daughter, Debi Powell; her son, Cliff Hart; her grandson, Ben; as well as her parents, Bud and Sadie Gott; and her sisters Bette Thompson and baby Carol.
The family wishes to thank the Sadler, Harrell, Bliss and Lessard families for being such wonderful neighbors for the past 33 years. Thanks also to Andy Schock, PAC, the staff at North Star Lodge, and Cindi and Andrea from Hospice for your patience, wisdom, and extraordinary care. A special thanks to the family members, especially grandkids, who cared for Melba allowing her to stay in her home until the end.
A graveside service is planned for Monday, January 21st at 11:00 am at IOOF Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at Family Christian Center, Capitol & Walnut, Ellensburg, WA. For those expressing sympathy, memorial donations can be given to Hospice Friends, 302 S Main St, Ellensburg, WA 98926 in honor of Melba’s life and loving-kindness.
