The Mahatma Ghandi quote, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of humankind” hangs on Joan’s doorstep and perfectly depicts her life’s philosophy.

Born in Yakima, Washington Joan attended Davis High School and Central Washington University. Her nickname in high school was Flame, describing her quick and fiery nature.

She married Milt Johnston, the love of her life, in 1990 and the two moved to Ellensburg soon after.

Despite living with Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 10, she was a fighter.  She walked a tight-rope with her health every day, but never lost her optimism or purpose.

Joan’s love of animals led her to help start the Kittitas County Friends of Animals, which has cared for and found homes for thousands of animals since its inception in 2005. For the non-adoptable cats (the oldest and sickest), Joan cared for them and gave them a home.  Her husband is now under strict orders to keep up with the level of care she provided.

She leaves behind her husband of 28 years; Milt Johnston, sister; Donna Maxwell, brother David Chissus, step-daughters and their spouses; Andrea Bush (Mike Bush) and Sara Johnston (Quincy Williams), grand-children Danny, Courtney, Caitie, Tejah and Eli and great-grandchild Claire (even though she’s too young to have grandkids).

With her sparkling hazel eyes, beautiful smile, compassionate grace and kind heart she is truly loved and will be dearly missed. Thank you for being you, Joan Johnston, be off about your business.

Joan had a heart attack and passed away from complications from heart surgery.  To honor her wishes, there will be no memorial service.  In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to:
