Shirley Ione (Davis) Orthmann passed away peacefully on June 9, 2018, at 91 years of age. She was born January 8, 1927, in Roslyn, WA to John Kenneth and Maude (Morgan) Davis. For several years, the family lived in Roslyn above the candy store Shirley's parents owned. The family also lived in Thorp, WA, and eventually moved to Ellensburg, WA in 1943. Shirley graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1944 and attended Central Washington College of Education for four quarters. Her school years included participation in choir, 4-H club, and working as a secretary for a minister.

During WWII airborne training, Shirley’s brother, John Davis, became acquainted with Charles Orthmann of NJ. John gave Charles permission to write to Shirley, and their correspondence blossomed into romance. They were married at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Ellensburg on January 20, 1946, when he returned from the war.
Shirley and Charles lived in Ellensburg from 1946 to 1949, where the first two of their eleven children were born. In 1949, they moved to Kennewick, WA. During 25 years of their life in Kennewick, they lived on a small farm south of town.
Shirley was a loving and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted homemaker. She loved reading and learning and encouraging her children in those pursuits. She was creative, and talented at sewing and baking (especially beautifully decorated birthday cakes). She loved listening to music and enjoyed many sports, especially Seattle Mariners games. Shirley didn't criticize and seldom gave advice without being asked. Her values and skills were passed on to her children through teaching and example.
A member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Kennewick for 55 years, Shirley enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in Altar Society activities. Each year, she prepared homemade pies for St. Joseph’s annual turkey dinner and donated handmade items for the church bazaar fundraisers. Her generous spirit was extended to all, including donations to her favorite charities, which often benefitted children. She was a woman of great faith.
In 2004, Shirley and Charles moved to Yakima, WA, where they attended church at Holy Rosary Parish in Moxee, WA.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Charles; sons, Thomas and David Orthmann; parents, Kenneth and Maude Davis; brother, John Davis; and sisters, Elizabeth Crandall and Dorothy Mason. She is survived by her children, Diane Stone, Dennis Orthmann (Janis), Gerard Orthmann (Cathy), Paul Orthmann (Leslie), Mary Anne Thomas (Rob), Joan Nelson (Kevin), John Orthmann (Dee), Michael Orthmann, and Linda Katzenberger (Larry); 26 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Rita Hetzel of NJ; and brothers-in-law, John Orthmann of NJ, Paul Orthmann (Charlotte) of AZ, and Hans Wetzel of PA.
The visitation will be on Thursday, June 14, 2018, from 5-7PM and Recitation of the Rosary at 6:30PM, both at Holy Rosary Parish Church (201 N. Iler, Moxee, WA). The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, June 15, 2018, at 10AM at Holy Rosary Parish Church, followed by a Graveside Service at Holy Rosary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Catholic Family and Child Services, in care of Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936), who is caring for the family.
