Monte Lee Berghoff, 71, passed away on April 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family following a brief bout with pneumonia complicated by Huntington’s Disease.

Monte was born on April 9, 1947 in Yakima, WA., to Thomas L. and Ethel (Adams) Berghoff. He attended St. Joes Marquette and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1965.
In September 1968, Monte enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served until September 1974. He served one tour in the Vietnam War where he was assigned to a field artillery unit firing Howitzer cannons. Monte returned to Yakima and was a route truck driver for several years and retired from Food Services of America in 2007. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Yakima Ridge Runners and spent many weekends at the Ahtanum Jeep Bowl camping with family and friends. He was known in the Jeep Club as the “Chrome Ball Walker”.
In 1972, Monte met the love of his life, Jane Fowler, and never left her side. Monte and Jane were married in 1974 and raised their family in Toppenish until they moved to Yakima in 2004. Monte loved hunting, fishing, and golfing whenever possible. He also loved their trips to Cannon Beach and watching his beloved Mariners and Seahawks.
Monte is survived by his wife, Jane Berghoff from Yakima, one daughter, Lisa (Greg) Tri from Selah, and two sons, Jacob Berghoff from Spokane and Seth Berghoff from Moxee. Monte was also a grandfather to 8 grandchildren – Kennedy, Paige, and London Tri, Ryder, Rowan and Stella Berghoff, and Denali and Kai Anderson-Berghoff. Monte is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Randy Berghoff, and his sister, Sharon Peterson.
Monte’s family would like to thank the staff at Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital for their care and support for Monte during his final day and his special care giver, Sue Warrington, for her care for the last few months. Monte’s family would like to especially thank Monte’s care giver and angel, Rachel DeLoza, for her love and admiration for Monte over the last two years.
