Velma “Shirley” Uhlman passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 8, 2018 in Yakima, WA. Shirley was born on February 24, 1929 in Moline, Illinois to Leroy and Dorothy (Dahl) Zeiner. She grew up and graduated from East High School in Waterloo, Iowa.  After graduation, she went to work for the telephone company as phone operator in Waterloo. There she met Jim Uhlman and they were married October 16, 1949 in Waterloo, Iowa. 

In 1953 with the birth of their son Jerry, she became a full-time homemaker. In 1955 Mark was born and she and Jim raised their family in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Shirley was a great cook! Her sons and their friends loved her wonderful meals and chocolate chip cookies after performing and practicing with their Rock and Roll bands.
In 1985, Jim and Shirley decided to give up the snow in Iowa and moved to Mesa, Arizona for retirement which they enjoyed until March 2015.  They then moved to Living Care Retirement Community to be near family in Yakima.
Her enjoyments in life were playing bridge, golfing, bike riding and traveling with Jim. They enjoyed many trips to Europe and Mexico through the years. Her biggest enjoyment was her family. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Dorothy Zeiner, her brother Lavern Zeiner. She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Marcia) Uhlman of Colorado Springs, Co and Mark (Sue) Uhlman of Yakima, WA.  She is survived by 4 grandchildren, Matthew (Missa) Uhlman of Yakima, WA, Sara (Jesse) Thomas of Richland, WA, Michael (Allyson) Uhlman of Yakima, WA, and Luke (Stephanie) Uhlman of Arlington, TX, and 9 great grandchildren. 
At Shirley’s request, there will be no funeral, but a private family gathering at a later time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Living Care Retirement Community in care of Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936).
