John Preston Grindrod Sr. took his last breath on the evening of February 28, 2018 and left us to join his mother Mildred and father Owen in eternity.  He was 62 years young and loved and laughed with his family until his final moments.

John, Dad, Papa John, or Grandpa, as he was known, was born on October 10, 1955 in Kittitas, WA., and he loved the valley so much that he decided to stay.  Getting him over the mountains was saved for family or special events.  On June 11, 1976 he married the true love of his life, Kellie.  Shortly thereafter, the population of Kittitas began to rapidly increase.  Through the births of his and Kellie’s eight children the true joy and purpose of John’s life was born.  His life revolved around family and he worked hard to provide every necessity.  John was a fiercely loyal husband and friend who could be counted on by many to lend a helping hand whenever needed.  He served his community as a volunteer fireman, where he was issued the fire boots that his children loathed.  He was frequently seen around town styling in his boots instead of practical footwear.  He could fix just about anything and up until his death was counted on by some of his children to diagnose car problems over the phone, from thousands of miles away.  His humor was memorable and he was a master of bad dad jokes and puns…He created a home that was built on love, and if you were a friend of one of his children, you were treated and loved as if you were family.  To the casual observer he lived a simple life.   He worked harder than most, and talked even less.  He believed that well done was better than well said, unless he was cheering at one of his kids’ sporting events – in that case his voice was easy to distinguish.  For over 40 years of his short life he loved with few words but big actions.  He ensured all 8 of his children knew how loved they were and how proud he was of each of them.  He gave everything to his family and withheld nothing.  His love story with Kellie was amazing to witness.  Through the many trials and difficulties, they encountered, she truly was his greatest joy and their marriage was an example of unwavering companionship and love.
John is survived by his bride of nearly 42 years, Kellie Jean Grindrod.  His 8 children: John and Jessica Grindrod of San Antonio, Texas; Marc and Katherine Chamberlain of Mt Vernon, WA; Jeremiah and Keren Grindrod of Scottsdale, AZ; Steve Parrish and Jennifer Grindrod of Anchorage, AK; Kurtis Grindrod and Liz Elmquist of Walla Walla, WA; Kasey and Carole Grindrod of Colorado Springs, CO; Justin Grindrod of Kittitas, WA; and Kyle Grindrod of Kittitas, WA.  His 8 grandchildren Jameson, Owen, Kiara, Karsyn, Bergen, Kylie, Ian and Brecon.  He is also survived by his best friend Neil Wilson.
The Grindrod’s would be honored if you would join them in celebrating the legacy of John’s life on March 11, 2018 at 2pm in the old Kittitas High School Gym at 505 N. Pierce St. Kittitas WA, 98934.
