Helen Smith, born in Ellensburg, Washington on March 1, 1932 to Ben and Floss Dreyer, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the age of 85. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loving family. Helen spent her childhood in Ellensburg with her sisters Peggy, Billie and Jackie. Growing up, Helen enjoyed milking cows on the small family dairy and spending time with her beloved horse, Babe. Her father would brag about how she could do a one armed push-up, and was stronger than any boy he knew.  Helen graduated from Ellensburg High School with her class of 1950.  Shortly after, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard “Dick” Alvin Smith on June 5, 1950.

Dick and Helen had four children; Perry, Monty, Camie and Tracy. When the children were young, Helen attended Central Washington State College, and in 1964 earned her Bachelors of Arts in Education with an endorsement in art. In 1965, Helen became a kindergarten teacher for the Ellensburg School District. She taught kindergarten for 27 years until her retirement from Mt. Stuart Elementary in 1992. Helen wrote in her letter of retirement, “Twenty-seven years and about six hundred seventy kindergarten children have taught me everything I need to know and more!”
Helen was extremely devoted to her family and friends and was happiest when she was able to be in the company of her 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.  She enjoyed staying active, and frequently could be found socializing over a cup of coffee with members of her exercise group, her classmates in their sewing club, or at a weekly breakfast with her retired teacher friends.  She and Dick also traveled monthly with their motor home group until recent years.
During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, painting, crafting, and working in her beautiful gardens. The last big project she and Dick worked together on was the refurbishing of an 1800’s era doctor’s buggy.  Helen stayed extremely involved in the community by volunteering for the Red Cross, the Food Bank, and the Clothing Bank. Helen could be found every year helping prepare the community Christmas baskets as well as helping out at local 4-H and school events.
She is survived by her husband Dick, son; Perry Smith, daughters; Camie (Shawn) Hedrick, Tracy (Richard) Arlt and daughter-in-law Wendy Smith, her 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, sisters; Billie (Alan) Harmon and Jackie Grayson.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Peggy Johnson, her son, Monty Smith, and her great grandson, Liam Smith.  Helen’s feisty, hard-working, compassionate, devoted personality has left an everlasting influence on her family, students, colleagues, friends and fellow community members.  Helen made a huge mark on the Ellensburg community and will be greatly missed by many.
