 NATIVIDAD RIOJAS

Our dearly loved Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandmother, Sister and Aunt left us on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Emerald Care in Wapato, WA surrounded by her loving family.  She was born to Frutuso and Maria Rita (Rosas) Torres in Eagle Pass, Texas on September 12, 1921 and entered a family of eight siblings. Her parents died during her teenage years where the siblings helped each other in growing up. During this time her Grandma Maria Gonzales Rosas would visit them. Mom shared stories of her Grandma who lived to 100 years of age, plus Mom received elementary education only.

Mom loved music where she met Indalesio Riojas at a dance in Eagle Pass, TX and married on April 10, 1942. They traveled a couple of times to work in the fields between Montana and Washington returning to Texas each time.  At this point Mom was tired of the travels and wanted to settle at one location. It was decided Washington State would be their new home. When they moved they also brought Dad’s parents and siblings. Grandview, WA was their first home where their first child was born; Raul and tragically lost their firstborn at 11 months. They then had their second child, a son Mike in Grandview before moving to Toppenish, WA where Ray, Elba and Rita were born. This home is where memories were made and celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Mom took care of the family while Dad was serving in CCC Camp, Civilian Conservation Camp during the early years of their marriage and the Great Depression. Her determination to get things done was met without hesitation to give all for the family; a wonderful cook where family meals was a routine to see what we were having, taught herself how to sew, who made our clothing for school, plus baby blankets for the grandkids, having a garden was always in place and teaching herself how to drive. She retired from the Laundry Department at Central Memorial Hospital at age 69. Mom always had her faith, a longtime parishioner at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, a member of the Guadalalupanas where she enjoyed baking for the Bake Sales and enjoyed many friendships. Through good time and not, she remained joyful and undeterred by any obstacles along the way. Teaching the family the importance of having faith was instilled in all of us. Relaxing at home would be listening to Mexican and Country Music and she was excited when she attended ceremonies where music was played to dance.

She is survived by her children; Mike Riojas, Ray (Josie) Riojas, Elba (John) Richards and Rita (Walter) Jones, brother, Sam Torres, grandkids, Michael, Stephanie, Ray, Jr., Lisa, Celeste, Chrissy, Paul and Raquel, step-grandkids, Nick and Liz, great-grandkids, Luke, Rena, Olivia, Lily, Nicolas, Anthony, Marcus, Rylee and Vivian, step-great grandkids, Dehvyn, Renner and Grady.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, infant son Raul, brothers, Frutoso Torres, Jose Torres, Candalerio Torres, and Dan Torres, sisters, Jesusita Ruiz, Lela Del Toro, and Lupe Moran and a daughter-in-law, Carmen Riojas.
