Joanne Russell peacefully passed away on January 5, 2018 at Fieldstone Memory Care.  She was born at home on October 12, 1934 at Willram-Craig residence in Redmond, OR.  The family moved to Toppenish in the spring of 1935.  Joanne attended school through the 5th grade in Toppenish, then the family moved to Naches in the summer of 1945.  She graduated from Naches High School in 1952.  She then attended Tacoma General Hospital of Nursing, where she graduated in 1955.  She was employed as a RN In the surgical unit at Memorial Hospital, then the Red Cross Blood Bank until she married Jay Russell in 1957. She was then employed at Pullman General Hospital until Jay graduated in 1959.  They then moved to Wenatchee where their daughter, Lorri, was born in Waterville.  They moved back to Cowiche, and she was employed by Memorial Hospital on the medical floor.  Later they moved to Everett, where their son, Larry, was born in 1960.  They moved to Gleed when Jay transferred to the USFS, and lived at the Tieton Ranger Station until 1965, when they moved to their current home in Naches.  Joanne worked temporarily for Memorial Hospital, then for Dr. Bowman for 12 years.  After acquiring her Oncology Certification, she finished her career in Home Health at Providence Hospital until her retirement.  She was a regular member of the Naches Presbyterian Church. 


With her family, she enjoyed skiing and snowmobiling in the winter and fishing, boating, and camping in the summer. She also enjoyed several motorhome trips from Copper Canyon to Artic Circle with Joye and Jerry Chase.


She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jay Russell, and their daughter Lorri (Jim) Schneider, and son, Larry (Denise) Russell, as well as her grandchildren, Derik (Kristi) Schneider, Niklaus Schneider, Taryn Russell, and Devyn Russell.  She is also survived by her great grandchild, Vivan Schneider, and sister in law, Dorothy Matthes and sister, Donetta Peppers.


The family would like to thank the staff at Fieldstone Memory Care facility for their exceptional care of Joanne in her last few months.  A special thanks also to our Aunt Dorothy Matthes, who provided many comfort meals.  She shared special moments with our mom during her final journey.


At Joanne’s request, there will be a Graveside Service on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:0 at Naches Cemetery, followed by a gathering at Margaret’s Apple Cart Deli (220 Naches Ave., Naches, WA).  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Yakima Humane Society, in care of Brookside Funeral Home, (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936), who is caring for the family.
