Claude "Smitty" Smith

Claude (Smitty) Vincent Smith Jr., 86, passed away peacefully in his home on December 3rd, 2017 surrounded by his family. Claude was born on July 5th, 1931, the son of Claude Sr. and Lillian Smith. He spent his childhood in Toppenish, WA, where he learned the trade of an electrician in his teen years. At the age of 17 he joined the army and was sent to Fort Monmouth in New Jersey to receive further education in electronics. He was later sent to New Mexico to use his skills working on advanced weapons guidance systems.

After spending four years in the Army, he moved to Yakima, WA where he met a young woman named Mary who swept him off his feet. Claude and Mary were married on New Year’s Eve, 1954, at St. Paul Cathedral in Yakima. Determined to please his new wife, Claude built their first house in Yakima on South 2nd Avenue. Claude and Mary were overwhelmingly blessed with nine children, five girls and four boys. Claude and Mary fostered over 40 children as well.
In 1970 Claude and Mary decided to move their large family to the rural town of Cowiche to experience life on a farm. In 1971, soon after the Vietnam war ended, Claude and Mary sponsored the Vu family from Vietnam who lived in a house next door. They continue to be good friends of the family.  Claude
built their last house in West Yakima where he and Mary lived for 25 years. 
Claude worked as a salesman for RCA for several years. Claude was store manager of Lay and Nord Electronics and purchased the electronics wholesale division in 1976.  Opening SMITTY’S ELECTRONICS on 5th Ave. in Yakima.  He was well-known for his knowledge of vacuum tubes and Radio/TV repair providing repair parts to every TV repair shop in the Yakima Valley.  After closing the store in 1980, he continued to use his skills in electronics installing satellite dishes and continued to do so until his retirement.
Throughout his life, Claude gave as much as he could to his family, his parish, Holy Family Catholic Church, and the community in which he lived. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also an usher at church for many years and was sure to greet everyone with a smile, a handshake or a hug before Mass. He treasured his family and friends and treated everyone who entered his home like it was their own.
Above all, Claude loved our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was a wonderful spiritual leader to his wife and children.
Claude was preceded in death by his father, Claude Sr, mother, Lillian, his sisters, Betty, Geraldine, Frankie, and his daughter, Christine. 
His is survived by his wife Mary, his children, Steve, Carlene (Markfelder), Mike, Marcie, Joe, Carol (Gaulke), Paul and Patty (Simms), 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at Brookside Funeral Home (500 Prospect, Moxee, WA 98936) on Tuesday, December 5th from 2 to 7 pm. A Vigil will be held Wednesday evening, December 6th at 6 pm in Holy Family Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday morning, December 7th at 10 am, at Holy Family Catholic Church.
