“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” John 11:25

Merle M. Smith, 86, of Selah, WA passed out of death into life on November 5, 2017. He was born February 18, 1931, to Thelma and Lester Smith in Paola, Kansas. He began high school in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Yakima High (now Davis) in 1949. After a year at Yakima Valley College Merle transferred to Washington State College and graduated in 1953 with a degree in Zoology, specializing in Wildlife Management. While in college he met and married Dorothy (Ragsdale) of Columbus, MT in 1952.  They celebrated their 65th anniversary September 6 of this year.
At WSC he was involved in ROTC, then enlisted in the Air Force, serving a majority of the time as a munitions officer at Sedalia AFB, (a Strategic Air Command base) in Missouri.  Following discharge in1956 he returned to Selah to pursue a career in agriculture, which included inspecting for the State, growing organic cherries and running his own organic products business.
He was a member of the Selah Heights Grange and the Selah Masonic Lodge but was most fulfilled by his association with Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church, Yakima (formerly First Presbyterian), and the Yakima Union Gospel Mission.  As a church member he taught Sunday School, served as deacon and elder, and on evangelism teams. He was active on the board of the Mission, serving for several years as president.
Merle enjoyed hunting, fishing, being out-of-doors with his family, envisioning innovative farming techniques, and relating his ideas to his friends. He was also devoted to sharing his faith with those he encountered.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister Brenda Norris (Paul), daughters Sheri Jacobson (Gordon), and Robin Gray (Jeff), and son Derek Smith (Kay).  He enjoyed his time with his seven grandchildren: Kelsey Haugan, Connor Jacobson, Evan, Trent and Neal Gray, and Keelan and Karly Smith. Merle was preceded in death by his brother, Damon Smith.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to either Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church Yakima, or the Yakima Union Gospel Mission.
