Dennis Crabtree, 63, of Yakima, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at his home after suffering a severe heart attack.

Dennis was born in Toppenish on Nov. 13, 1953 and raised in Moxee. As a boy, Dennis loved watching the stars and planets through his telescope. He grew up working for his step-father Merritt on the family cattle ranch and wheat farm.  After graduating from East Valley High School, Dennis joined the Navy. Just before leaving for Boot Camp he met Shelly and they fell in love. They wrote letters while he was in the service and he purposed to her over the telephone. He married Shelly in Yakima on a two day Leave of Absence in 1973. Dennis served in the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War, running water evaporators on the U.S.S. Coral Sea from 1972 to 1975.
After the Navy, Dennis and Shelly settled in Kennewick where he went to work for U.S. Ecology, burying nuclear waste. He became a Christian and was baptized in the faith in 1981. Dennis and Shelly had three sons and in 1989 he felt called to the ministry and moved the family to Tacoma where he earned a Masters of Divinity from Northwest Baptist Seminary.
The family returned to Yakima in 1993 and Dennis started Victory Baptist Church in Terrace Heights where he pastored for 12 years. Later he opened his own business selling home computers before he retired in 2008. In his retirement he became an active member of the Yakima Valley Harley Davidson and Corvette owner’s groups and was developing his skills at photography and the electric guitar. Dennis was good, strong, and giving and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Shelly, and his sons, Justin, Brian, and Daniel, as well as his brother, Gaylord, and his mother, Genevieve Fines.
A Celebration of His Life will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at the Terrace Heights Foursquare Church.  Burial will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park with full military honors.
