Joseph “Joe” D. Zimmerman, 89, of Yakima, peacefully passed away at Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital on November 5, 2017.  He was born in Yakima, WA on August 24, 1928 to Joseph and Mary Zimmerman. He was the middle of 8 children. He graduated from Yakima High School in 1946.  He married Ann Bowker and later divorced, maintaining a friendly relationship. On January 8, 1977 he married Virginia Cottle, whom he often called the love of his life.  

Joe’s passion was acting and entertainment.  He enjoyed poetry and was involved in the Shakespeare Readers Theater in Seattle. He competed as a Skeet Shooter and won many championships.  He was involved in auto sales and never met a stranger or someone he couldn’t sell to. Virginia lovingly called him “Flappy Lips”.  His favorite holiday was St. Patrick’s Day, proud to be Irish.  He honorably served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict Era.  His favorite expression after being treated well was “You’ll get your reward in Heaven”.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Zimmerman, of Yakima and her children, Gail (Ren Brown) Cottle, of Corvallis, Montana, Alan (Monica) Cottle, of Yakima, and Mark (Laurie) Cottle, of Bellevue. He is also survived by his 3 sisters, Marg Marks, Florence Shawa, and Theresa Paulson.  His step daughter, Erin Von Stueben, is also surviving. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Alison, Morgan, Mackenzie, and Alexandra Cottle. He is preceded in death by his brothers Jim, John, and his sisters, Catherine and MaryAnn.  
A Memorial Service will be held December 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Michael's Episcopal Mission Church, 5 S Naches Ave., Yakima WA.  Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Yakima Humane Society or Shriner’s Children Hospital, in care of  Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936) who is caring for the family.
