Mary Ellen, was born April 1, 1927 to Nicolas Clerf and Eleanor (Buening) in Ellensburg, WA. She was raised on a cattle ranch and attended rural school No. 6, Lourdes Academy and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1945. Mary graduated from Holy Names College in 1949 and attained a Master’s degree in education from Central Washington University. She married Robert B. Rogers Jr. on June 26, 1953 and made their home in Yakima for 64 years.

Mary retired from YSD #7 in 1990 after 30 years of teaching primary education and spear heading the             Special Education program at Madison and McKinley Schools. She was a recipient of the Golden Apple Award and member of the NEA. She was a dedicated educator who cherished her students and loved her vocation.

Mary loved being a homemaker, mother, gardener and volunteering her spirit and time to many charitable causes. Mary was an active participant in her Catholic faith, especially at St. Paul’s Parish. She was a member of the Young Ladies Institute #96, served on the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and learned American Sign Language to communicate with her deaf in-laws. Mary and Bob were instrumental in working with the Catholic deaf community. In addition, she was active in Yakima’s Interfaith Coalition, Rod’s House, and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Moxee, just to name a few.

Mary gave her time and beautiful spirt freely to family and friends without reservation. Above all, she was a devout servant of our Savior Lord Jesus Christ, as evidenced in every aspect of her life and witnessed by many. She was a loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and trusted friend. She loved gardening, floral arranging, baking, volunteering, and especially spending time with her loved ones along her faith journey.

She is survived by her family: sons David Rogers, Reno, NV, Bryan (Susan), Yakima, Dennis (Margo) Yakima, daughters, Cynthia (Craig) Elquist, Yakima, Patty (Terry Myers), Yakima, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, brother Theodore Clerf, sisters, Rita Hiatt and Loretta Clerf, numerous nephews, nieces and the Johnson family.

Those who knew Mary loved her. She was a person of great faith and lived life serving others. Her loving heart was an inspiration to us all and she will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
