He grew up in Arkansas, where he attended and graduated from Huntsville High School. Right out of high school Chuck enlisted with the Navy, serving two enlistments. During his time in the Navy he was deployed to Vietnam during a time of heavy fighting. Chuck met his wife, Esther, in September of 1993, and they were married shortly after. One of his prized possessions was his Martin guitar, playing it any chance he got. He enjoyed playing country western music, as well as listening to country and gospel music. He was a diehard Mariners fan, going to as many games as he could. At one game, on August 26, 2015, Chuck was watching his beloved Mariners and caught a foul ball, bare handed, that Nelson Cruz hit into the first base side.
