Robert Norman Masterman,86, of Yakima, was born March 8, 1931 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, WA and passed away, Friday, September 1, 2017 at Cottage in the Meadow.
 
Bob attended Catholic Grade school in Tacoma before moving to Yakima., graduating from Yakima High School in 1949. Bob lettered both baseball and basketball going on to play basketball at Eastern Washington University. As a freshman, he played on the varsity team. Nicknamed “Masty” he was a force to be reckoned with. At 6’6” and 185 lbs. he was unstoppable. Bob and his teammates were recently honored by being inducted into the EWU Hall of Fame.
 
He married Margaret Willson in the summer of 1950 continuing his education until he and Margaret moved to Union Gap where he began his career with the Washington State Department of Highways working his way up to Civil Engineer before retiring in 1980. 
 
Bob served as Assistant Fire Chief for the Union Gap Department and was appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Volunteer Firemen where he served for many years.
He was also elected Mayor of Union Gap and was the ombudsman between the City of Union Gap and developers of the Valley Mall.
 
Bob never met a stranger and would start up a conversation with anyone about anything, anywhere. Bob loved his family above all else and he was a friend you could always count on. 
 
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret, daughter Christine and husband Chris Manolopoulos, son, Robert, Jr. and wife Barbara, son Joel and wife Margaret and daughter Robin and husband Jeff Wendel; 8 grandchildren, Scott, Bryan, Joshua & Andrew Wellner, Katie Holliman, Kevin Masterman, Kyle Masterman and Carolyn Wendel; also 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. 
 
The family is very grateful to everyone at the Cottage in the Meadow for their compassion and incredible care of our whole family.
 
A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held Friday, September 15, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory, 500 W. Prospect, Moxee. Memorials may be made to the Cottage in the Meadow or favorite charity of the donor, c/o Brookside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936. In memory of Bob, please wear his high school colors, black and orange.
