On Friday, August 25, 2017, Petra Ponko, of Yakima, passed away suddenly at the age of 72.
Born in Wroclaw (Breslau), Poland, Petra and her mother fled advancing Russian forces during World War II to settle in Bamberg, Germany where she and her mother survived severe post-war hardships. Her life was saved by a friendly G.I., something she was always grateful for. She loved traveling and spent fondly-remembered time living with a host family in Italy in her youth.
Petra married Marshall Ponko, a Captain in the U.S. Army; moved stateside in 1976 and lived in Yakima for the last 35 years. She provided care-taking services for the disabled and elderly and was an active member of the local German club. She was a remarkable person, strong and true to herself. Her strength came from life experiences. “Don’t try to hide true nature,” she’d say. “The people you really want to have dining at your table with you will see right through it.”
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Stefan, daughter-in-law Cindy, and grandchildren Lea and Ian.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory, 500 W. Prospect, Moxee. Memorials may be made to Yakima Humane Society, c/o Brookside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936.
