Rodger A. Pearson, 85, longtime Selah resident, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017 in his family home of 59 years, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Rodger was born May 30, 1931 in Swedeburg, NE to Victor and Esther Pearson. In the late 1930’s his family moved to Selah, WA where he grew up on the farm with his four siblings. Rodger attended Selah High School where he was very active in sports, playing basketball, tennis and running cross country, graduating in 1949. Rodger met his future wife when her brother brought him home from a baseball game. Rodger immediately swept Maridee off her feet, they were married shortly after in 1953.  They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this month.
Rodger was a sports fanatic, watching them on TV or going to the games. It didn’t matter who was playing, from little league to professional, he would be there watching. In the early 60’s Rodger and Bill Carlon started the T-Ball league in Selah that is still going on today. He coached in the peewee league as well. Children were very important to Rodger, he would sponsor many through FFA and the 4H programs by donating animals. To Rodger, farming was life, he would always say that the smell of manure was the smell of money. He would just jump in the truck and drive the countryside looking at the beautiful farm land and dairies. He knew all the dairy owners for miles around.
Rodger is survived by his loving wife, Maridee, of 64 years, daughters Karen Hogan, Kathy and Kelly Phinney, sons, Kenny Pearson (Theresa Gonzalez) and Kevin and Diane Pearson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Cristy (Jared) Coleman, Jason Phinney, Shannon (Shawn) Conley, Jake (Haley) Pearson, Kyle Pearson, Megan Pearson, Evan Hogan, and Kaydee Hogan; five great grandchildren, Addyson Conley, Tristen Coleman, Maddie Phinney, Alexa Conley, and Sadie Coleman. He is also survived by his sister Carol Gustafson and sister in law Beryl Pearson. He is preceded in death by his sister and brother in law, Elaine and Dick Lundberg, brother James Pearson, twin sister Rogene, who recently passed away on March 20, 2017, and brother in law Donald Johnson.
