On Saturday, April 15, 2017, Elaine Bates was whisked away from her Earthly home on the wings of angels into the loving arms of her heavenly father. Mom was born on January 19, 1924 in Kalispell, Montana to Swedish immigrant parents, Alfred and Hulda Koford.

Elaine was the youngest of 8 siblings. After graduating from Flathead High School, she decided she would like to experience the “big city” life and moved to Seattle, Washington. There, Elaine worked at Frederick & Nelson and held an office position in the shipyards. She and her girlfriends loved going to dances and it was at a USO dance that she met Walter Bates. Elaine and Walter married in 1946 and in 1948 they were blessed with a daughter. In 1950, they moved to Yakima, Washington, fell in love with the valley and remained here. Mom was employed by St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, now called Regional Hospital, as a business manager for 25 years. She and dad were members of the Formal Dance Club where they made many friends and long lasting relationships. Mom played the piano and organ, enjoyed drawing and painting, and was an excellent seamstress. She was strong, independent and cared deeply for the people in her life. For the last three and half years she lived at Highgate Senior Living in Yakima where she was blessed with good friends and loving caregivers.

Elaine is lovingly survived by her daughter and son in law, Paula and Frank Stewart of Yakima, granddaughters: Tami Champie (Bill) of Valpariso, IN., Kim (Dan) LaPierre of Powell, WY., great-grandchildren: JhoryAnne Nevers of Valpariso, IN., Selessi (Cody) Smith and Braedan Nevers of Yakima, WA., and great-great grandson, Tate Smith of Yakima, WA., nieces: Phyllis (Roy) Caldwell of Arizona, Gail Tharpe of Kalispell, and Cheryl (Larry) Guild of Gresham, OR. Mom is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her wonderful husband of 44 years, Walt Bates.

At mom’s request, there will be no services. She would like to thank all those at Highgate who closely and lovingly looked after her. In lieu of flowers, give those you love a smile and a hug.
